 Kagoshima City (鹿児島) is the capital of Kagoshima Prefecture, in the Kyushu region, southwestern Japan. Kagoshima brand beef, “Kagoshima Kuroushi”, won the number one spot in Japan in the “National Wagyu Skill Co-Promotion Association” competition in 2017, as well as the number of cattle raised.

4. Kagoshima holds two Guinness World Records

Sakurajima volcano, said to be the symbol of Kagoshima prefecture, has two of the best products in the world, the world’s largest radish “Sakurajima Daikon” (桜島大根) and the world’s smallest mandarin “Sakurajima komikan “(桜島小みかん). Surpassing the best in Japan. The average weight of the Sakurajima radish is 10-20 kg, with the largest weighing more than 30 kg. The komikan or the smallest mandarin in the world has a diameter that does not exceed 5cm and a weight of 40 to 50g.

 

 

5. Kagoshima prefecture is one of the longest, about 600 km from north to south 

 

In Kagoshima prefecture there are many remote islands, and about one third of the prefecture area is made up of them. The total area of these remote islands is around 2,474 ㎢ and the number of people living on such islands is around 160,000, this area is considered the largest in Japan.

7. Cranes and turtles

 

To the northwest of Kagoshima prefecture is the city of Izumi, where cranes arrive from Siberia every fall to winter. The number of cranes exceeds 10,000 and is the highest number in Japan.

 

Kagoshima Prefecture is also the prefecture where sea turtles land the most in Japan. Also the first prefecture in all of Japan to enact the “Sea Turtle Conservation Ordinance” in 1988.

 

 

8. Gold mine in Kagoshima

 

Sado Kinzan (now closed) in Niigata prefecture is one of the best-known gold mines, but the Hishikari mine in Kagoshima prefecture produces more than twice as much gold, making it the mine where the most gold can be dug in Japan. It represents more than 90% of the national production of gold, and the gold content in the mineral is more than eight times that of the main mines in the world, it is even said that it has the highest level of quality in the world.
